derCube – temporary
exhibition in changeable robe
At the viewpoint on the top of the Freudenberger spa gardens you could see high-contrast picture: Where the glance of the viewer usually hits a centuries-old ensemble of black and white half-timbered houses, he was offered a complete new sight during the last two months. At the edge of the historical heart of the village stood a building that appeared in its form and design as astonishing as the objects inside. As a temporary “ZeitRaum für Kunst” the Cube hosted an exhibition of the works of the world-famous couple Christo and Jeanne-Claude. And so imposing as the exhibition, so impressive was also the building.
Designed by the architects LHVH from cologne, the building consisted of 36 office modules (container) from the company ALHO from Morsbach. Six of these formed the two stairways. On three floors the building offered roughly 400 qm of exhibition area. But the special finish was provided with profiles from EPS: 500 qm facade were covered with recyclable PVC coated fabrics. Shimmering in a silver tone and accentuated by two green fabrics rows, the cube received its distinctive “skin”.
The particular of the fabric are its characteristics:
Tensioned into the aluminium profiles, the surface is
fixed like an eardrum, which is both flexible and resistible
against strong wind loads. Besides its stability the
transparency of the fabric offers a great creativity.
By colour or light design of the background, interesting
effects can be achieved which have given the Cube its
changeable “face”.
And at the end of the exhibition, the building was be
deconstructed easily so that all different components
could be used again separately.
Therefore the Cube was a successful unicum and another example for a permanently or temporarily realization with EPS tensioning profile systems.
