"We do a runner for you"
Illuminated wall map for Globetrotter in Baden
Regardless of whether it is the “Spirit of Asia“,
exotic Africa, the endless expanses of Patagonia or the
pulsating cities of this world, the staff of the Globetrotter
Travel Service office in Baden/Switzerland have one thing
in common: they love to travel to the remotest corners of
the earth on unbeaten tracks and, in the process, encounter
fascinating religions, philosophies and traditions. As travel
agents for independent travellers who prefer to take their
holidays far from the package holiday regions, they have
succeeded in doing what many people dream of, namely making
a profession of their hobby. “We’re just globetrotters
ourselves who, when we are not actually planning holidays
for our customers, like to seek out the wide open spaces
“, laughs a member of the staff.
So it is really only a logical outcome that these globetrotters
should have a large screen in their office with a map on
it symbolising the gateway to the great wide world. This
piece of craftsmanship was produced by the Swiss firm Neonilluma
AG, based in Effretikon, which has specialised in the design
and implementation of light designs and illuminated installations.
Project leader Peter Disch says, “This tailor made
light unit was fitted into a niche, flush with the wall
and ceiling, in the form of an arc. The constructional difficulty
we faced was in illuminating the whole sweep of the surface,
with a radius of three metres (length: 7 m, height: 2,50
m), without any breaks or waves. An excellent result was
achieved using EPS tensioning technology“. To construct
the atmospheric map, which would, without doubt, trigger
wanderlust not only in inveterate globetrotters, took only
one day, adds Peter Disch. Production of the substructure
was undertaken by Neonilluma themselves and constructed
of aluminium square tubing. EPS.LUMI
profiles were used for the light unit. The lounge furniture,
arranged for the customers in front of the light installation,
has a particularly attractive effect. Conclusion: anyone
seeing this without getting the urge to travel is beyond
help.
