A Shining Example: The Large 1&1
Perfect order compliance

Torsten Braun is over the moon: „A luminous cube that makes its mark and can’t be overlooked. Simply breathtaking“. The lighting designer from Limburg is looking out across the roof of internet provider 1&1 in Montabaur with tangible pride in the luminous object he has created jointly with Reklame Rudolph. Particularly during the evening hours, Torsten Braun continues, the illuminated cube fully comes into its own. The best aspect being that also the client, no less than the renowned 1&1 Internet AG, is highly satisfied with the results. “We were tasked with the creation of a luminous object that would be visible from all sides and plays a dominant role, most of all owing to its brightness”, explains Braun. “The client also wanted a lighting concept of particular longevity“. The conclusion: perfect order compliance, as the illuminated cube not only provides a wonderful eye-catcher from the nearby A3 highway or the ICE station, but will also be very hard to top for competitors.

The 8 x 8 x 8 meter blue cube construction is mounted on a 5 meter high pedestal. Selected for its illumination were over 600 dimmable, electronic ballasts with long-life fluorescent tubes providing a lifetime of approximately 30,000 hours. Exactly matching the desired shade of blue and hence the corporate identity of 1&1 Internet AG was another, particular challenge for the light designers, especially considering that this shade of blue needed to be achieved during the day as well as at night.

„For the final assembly of the illuminated cube on the roof of the 29 meters high office building we used a 250 ton crane, given the fact that more than 27 tons of steel needed to be installed to create a body with the required bearing capacity”, remembers managing director Norbert Klaes of Reklame Rudoph, the company commissioned with building the cube. In order to safeguard the creation against snow and ice, the cube was provided with a roof top heating unit and internal rainwater pipes. The cube’s four visible sides were then equipped with EPS.LUMI profiles, before the Seemee IV fabric was tensioned between them and finally provided with lettering made from 3M brand foil, in order to show off the unmistakeable 1&1 logo to its best advantage. „Thanks to the EPS tensioning technology we were able to execute the advertising surface without any panel joints or visible dividing lines. With any other material this would have been quite impossible to this extent” is how Torsten Braun summarizes the benefits in conclusion.
